4 Tips for Caring for Blonde Highlights

4 Tips for Caring for Blonde Highlights

Highlights are an easy way to add depth and dimension to your hair. The multi-tonal effect of adding highlights can breathe new life into a color that has fallen flat. If you’ve chosen blonde highlights they will require some special care to help them stay healthy and keep their true color. Here are 4 tips to keep your highlights looking great.

1- Deep Condition

Chemical processing such as coloring your hair can cause some dryness and damage. Weekly deep conditioning treatments moisturize and strengthen your hair to repair and protect it to keep your hair in tip-top shape.

2- Protect from the Elements

Just as the sun can damage the skin, it can also damage hair. Avoid sun damage by wearing a hat or scarf or by applying a UV blocking spray before going out. Chlorine in pools and salt and minerals in the ocean can discolor light-colored hair causing it to take on a brassy, grey, or even green hue. To prevent this, rinse your hair with cool water and apply a leave-in conditioner to seal the cuticle before swimming, and give your hair a good cool water rinse after you exit the water.

3- Use Products Formulated for Color-Treated Hair

Color-Treated hair requires special care, even if it’s only highlighted. Be sure you are using hair care products specially formulated for color-treated hair. These products are gentle and contain special nourishing ingredients to help your color last longer and repair damage from chemical processing.

4- Get Regular Trims

To keep your hair fresh and healthy you should have a trim every 6-8 weeks. This keeps dry split ends at bay. Split ends can cause frizz and tangling which will lead to breakage and more split ends.
